The A-Z of Chaos
The A-Z of Chaos - by Tom Critch
The A-Z Of Chaos - SynopsisA miserable excuse for a hero. A wide eyed newbie. A lunatic co-worker, a dead pan manager, oh and a fiendish world of death, sarcasm and insanity at every turn. And all of it packed inside the weirdest library youve ever been inFancy a nosy inside? In the quote on quote real world, all most libraries have to worry about is funding cut backs, replenishing their stock and making sure their customers are not too confused by the shelf stacking system. However, Crompton Library is not the real world. Because in here customers can go missing just as easily as books can, and youre more than likely to run into characters that seem to have stepped right out of the pages of literature as you are the volumes they belong in. This is a world of dusty winding corridors, dark forgotten creatures seeking revenge on the world, and a bunch of misfits who claim to be the staff. A place where logic and sense cannot save you, and if you wanna survive then you stick to the designated areas and try not to awaken any sleeping demons. From the moment Edie Sissons steps foot into her new job as Customer Relations Supervisor at Crompton library she knows this isnt going to be like working at Debenhams, here stopping worldwide destruction can just be as important as clocking out on time. Her colleague Oscar Whisk is her grumpy guide, and although he isnt thrilled at the idea of an outsider joining as staff, he soon begins to see that Edie belongs with him and the rest of the gang in a world where wits only come in halves and monsters come by the bucket load. Even before her first day is done she unwittingly catches the eye of a lustful Top Hat wearing psychotic with an army of playing card men, and must convince him and his knife wielding pet rabbit she is most defiantly not AliceEdie learns quick sharpish that she will have to use all of her retail based skills to get through the day, and utilize everything else at her disposal if she wants to survive till pay day. And its not just the villains who are an obstacle, the good guys arent much help to her either; Oscar dreams only of female singer songwriters and making it through the day, fellow librarian / walking tornado Keith seems exclusively interested in booze, mayhem and women, the manager Mrs. Mabel hates everyone around her, Stock Supervisor Mike looks like the Grim Reaper, and as for the computer information point known as Jarviswell, hes just a head in a water cooler. Sigh.Over her time at Crompton Library, Edie will have to put aside her social life, her boyfriend and her sanity to battle Top Hat wearing warlords, musically trained killer clowns, Vamperic Counts, zombies, alien invaders and even the terrifying mid-week staff drinking competitions. And its only just beginning A warped mixture of dark comedy, fantasy, horror, science fiction, literature and shed loads of foolishness, The A-Z Of Chaos will take you on a very odd journey indeed, through worlds you probably never wanted to go near and meeting characters too abysmal to function in any other reality. So watch with depraved glee as our heroes Oscar and Edie defend all they know in this world, whilst trying to keep a relative lid on the ludicrousness that haunts the decaying halls of Crompton Library.
The A-Z Of Chaos - Character BreakdownOscar - One of the longest serving librarians. Whilst deluded and foolish on an epic scale, he does have an odd sense of loyalty to the library and those within its walls. Has moments of madness, and yet is capable of heart warming sincerity. Feels threatened by the introduction of Edie to the library, but warms to her over time. He may be an unimpressive hero, but is also a thoroughly useless librarian.Edie - New to the library, and as a result is welcomed with suspicious eyes, especially by Oscar. She is sweet and honest, yet carries an oddness and eccentricity which makes her fit right in with the others. Naturally helpful, she seems to just go with everything that happens around her, no matter how trivial or warped. She has an egocentric gym-aholic boyfriend Harry, and balances her time between shelving books and saving the world. Keith Loon - would be the best word. How Keith came to be a librarian is a mystery, and how he survives day-to-day in the occupation is equally puzzling. A maniac and five star madman, constantly intoxicated by something, wide eyed and ready to leap on anything. Communicates usually through screams and noises, in terms of personality, the best way of describing Keith is be likening him to Animal from The Muppets.Mrs. Mabel - She is charged with looking after and over seeing the staff members, a task she performs with cold eyes and dead pan attitude. A cynical attitude hides, well, an incredibly cynical woman. Shes not interested in the well being of her staff, and is constantly reminding herself she still has Hell to look forward to.Mike - He is stock supervisor of the massive Stock Chambers, located in the Halls under the library. He may look like the Grim Reaper himself, but Mike is actually quite a nice guy, still living with his Mum and constantly worried hes not with it. He likes to get involved with the others believing they are his ticket to the world of the hip youngsters. Doesnt let the fact that he doesnt have a face hold him back in life.Brian - Health & Safety Officer, voodoo practitioner, a former Klu Klux Klan member, oh and a dog. He communicates, surprisingly, in barks, but is actually an evil scheming mutt whose tendency to try and destroy everything and everyone around him is barely masked by his appetite for cheap booze and fast women. Constantly sarcastic, forever plotting and always with something to say. Jarvis - A head floating in the water cooler at the library, Jarvis is the guy the others go to for advice on anything from relationships to mad men on the loose. Jarvis deludes himself with dreams of skiing and hiking, even though he is only a head. He always has a wise word, and seems to be the most intelligent of the lot of them.
